N.C. voters support stimulus plan 50-39%

Tom Jensen of Public Policy Polling reports that N.C. voters support President Obama's economic stimulus package, by a margin of 50 percent to 39 percent. And interestingly, the demographics in support of Obama's plan don't exactly mirror the margin by which he won North Carolina in November. Here's what Jensen has to say:

The stimulus is a complicated issue, and there are indications within the poll that voters are taking their cues about whether to support it from the Washington politicians speaking for and against the bill. With the President in strong support, so are 80% of Democrats. With Congressional Republicans in opposition, so are 71% of GOP voters in the state. Independents oppose the bill by a 53-33 margin.

The demographics that launched Barack Obama to a surprise victory in North Carolina last fall- African Americans, young voters, and women- are all in strong support of the bill. The ones that almost allowed John McCain to keep the state Republican- white voters and men- are considerably less supportive.

What does that all add up to? Public opinion on the stimulus in North Carolina is probably more a referendum on the President than anything else.

A more interesting take would be the view of those that are employed vs. unemployed. Do the recently layed-off white collar workers feel laissez faire is the best approach? It will be interesting to see Burr's reaction to the bill...NC is leading the US in year over year increases in unemployment.

Yes, NC unemployment rates are increasing, but Senator Hagan voted against an amendment in the stimulus bill that would equally divide the unemployment aide instead of giving more to states like NY and California. Thereby, NC is going to lose in the millions of dollars in aid. Thank you Senator Hagan.

I work two jobs in Charlotte and am for the stimulus. I added my employment status because for some reason people think only the ones expecting a handout are supporting Obama. I can't wait to vote against Richard Burr who voted against the stimulus, just like Elizabeth Dole he is putting Republicans first. I called his office to register my preference (for it) and was told he would vote against it unless "drastic changes" were made. Today I was told he did vote against it. I do appreciate the fact that he has people there answering his phone and also the website is easy to contact him on. Senator Hagen voted for the stimulus which follows N.C.'s wishes for now.

I support Senator Burr and appreciate his vote against the spending bill. People are blaming republicans for not voting for it, but not a SINGLE democrat voted against it. How Partison! I feel that a real stimulus bill could have been produced without all the pork. Obama is supporting the Pelosi's bill and not mentioning the included funding for ACORN, more government cars, and money to the Phillipines who fought in World War II. Transparency has not started yet. Senator Hagan's office said they were getting alot of calls against the spending bill, but she must have not cared and just wanted to please President Obama.

cltindependent,

Can you construct your sentences a little better? Your thought process is all over the place.

Did you say you're going to vote against Richard Burr just because he voted against it? What about the hundreds of other issues that will come up during his term?

Also, you don't make the distinction between partisan politics and personal views. Maybe Richard Burr didn't vote for it because he didn't agree with some of the spending. You make it seem like he voted against it simply because other Republicans did.

I don't know why anyone voted for Hagan. I followed Dole for years, tracking her votes and proposed amendments and thought she did an excellent job.

I think Hagan won simply because she put out more bumper stickers, the liberal bankrupt Observer endorsed her and people wanted that ridiculous Change. It's amazing how irresponsible most voters are.

It's a simple fact that states that vote conservative/Republican have some of the worst educational systems and are mostly poor and rural. NC was barely blue this year because it has quickly urbanized in the last 8 years. The more educated a person becomes the more liberal they are. Let's face it, for the most part, Republicans are not so bright and to them being "educated" is considered a bad thing. I also think it has to do with genetics. Some people are just born dumb (no matter how educated they are)...

Just another example of how Yanks and poor education is sapping the individualism that used to define North Carolina.

I see you are eating right out of your leftist scum pig professors' hands. Are you telling me that Chicago's school system is not one of the worst? Or NYC? Or CMS, which has been controlled by Dems? If you studied some head-in-the-clouds subject like Art History, Philosophy, Literature, Psychology, etc. and buy into what your PIG profs are telling you, then you become among the "educated liberals." (read: brainwashed lemmings). However, the DemPIG party is made up of minorities (poor, uneducated), low-income (poor, uneducated), blue collar (poor, uneducated), young people (poor, idealistic emotion-driven lemmings), and the "educated liberals." But NONE of these people understand economics, finance, accounting, business, or any such mentally challenging subject, so they and you are in NO POSITION to talk down to conservatives who recognize this bill for what it is: an excuse for LIBERAL SCUM PIGS to bloat the govt.

I try to be open-minded and befriend anyone no matter what they believe, but... every conservative person I have ever met is so closed-minded and just plain dumb (although they like to think they are smart). You just can't have an intelligent conversation with those people. However, they can recite any verse from the bible though... barf.

Obviously Republicans don't know **** about economics. Thanks to Republicans for the last 8 years! They failed to act when they needed to and then they just threw $350 billion at the economic crisis before they left office without putting any restrictions on that money and now it is GONE and it did nothing. THAT is a waste of money!!! You're quote, "conservatives who recognize this bill for what it is: an excuse for LIBERAL SCUM PIGS to bloat the govt" shows how big of an idiot and a hypocrite you are. The Bush Administration wasted $350 billion plus dollars not to mention all the money they have been throwing away at the war! Oh, and bloat government? HA, isn't it the conservatives who want to use the Bible to tell us how we should all live our lives, who we can marry, and what we should do with our bodies? Conservatives are idiots plain and simple.

as a yank, i dont believe that everyone is reading the entire stimulus package. There are plenty of good points about the package, but all should be informed as to the entire ramification of this bill. Your health care for instance will be affected. Read the bill. Understand that the entire bill will not just hand shovels and picks to all of the unemployed and send them out to build highways. Think and read. Understand what favors the senators and congressmen are adding to make this bill clean up their pet projects. It is fun to read how people quickly change their minds about who they voted for when they disagree with their politician. What happened to the message of hope that obama spoke about at the inauguration? Now it is a message of fear. Just what we need!! Vote no to this pork barrel stimulus package. Vote yes to reasonable spending.

OK moron. It was Dems who caused this crisis: "These two entities -- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac -- are not facing any kind of financial crisis," Rep. Barney Frank, now head of the House Banking Committee, said in 2003. "The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing." PIGS like Frank blocked laws Reps tried to introduce to limit subprime lending via Fan and Fred, and they collapsed.
Next, it's "Your quote," not you're, which means "You are quote," which makes you unaware of basic grammar, and you think you can talk econ with me? Get real. That drivel about using the Bible is completely baseless - show me what laws any Rep govt has passed or tried to pass to control our lives. So naive you are. It's Dems who want to control us and tell us whom to hire (x blacks, y gays, z browns), how to run our businesses, how much money we are allowed to make, etc. As to what to do with our bodies, I imagine you mean abortion. Sorry, sweetheart, but murder is illegal whether you're conservative or a liberal PIG. Trying to turn that into a debate about "my body" is a perfect ruse for emotional women like you. If it's a life and two humans created it, it must therefore be a human life. Prove otherwise to me (good luck). Therefore abortion is murder and an easy way out to remove responsibility from sex. I know liberal PIGS don't like personal responsibility, but that's life. Moreover, what does using religion to govern (which we don't) have to do with bloating the govt? Carter tried the same crap that Obamunist is doing, and guess what, Goldilocks? IT DID NOT WORK. I also find it typically Democritical of you to blast Bush for the bailout when that is all Dems ever want when something goes wrong - govt help. This crisis is unprecedented, so if experts disagreed how to handle it, how is it that an emotional, illogical, libby PIG like you can criticize it? Meanwhile Obamunist puts STD prevention, food stamps, art funding and other JUNK into a "Stimulus" bill? It's wrong, just as it was in the 1970s and 1930s. Come on, DemLemmings, don't follow your Obamunist Piper over the cliff!

"Barf?" How open-minded of you. I am no fan of religion, but no one can say for certain some of its basic beliefs are either true or not. As for open-mindedness, it's evident you haven't traveled much, since most conservatives I know will listen to a reasonable argument and discuss its merits. If you've only met rural conservatives, I suppose they'd be less enlightened, but the same is true of low-income Dems, esp. blacks. The govt invented AIDS? Come on. Or blue collar union Dems. Very close-minded and so against education, foreign trade, reading vs. watching TV, and any other intellectual pursuit. Then there are all the emotional freaks on the left (artistic types, actors, dancers, psych majors, philo majors, lit majors, etc.) who know NOTHING about econ, finance, business, and scream at conservatives with so much hatred and vitriol that they can't even respond. You libs really kill me. The things of which you accuse us, you are guilty of times ten.

This is the same "stimulus" bill to improve parks & rec and add bells'n'whistles to Memorial Stadium. The bill is reckless and irresponsible spending.

Anonymous said...

The only thing this bill "stimulates" is deficit spending! Nancy Pelosi thinks condoms stimulate the economy!

The underlying root issue in this economy is mortgages and home sales. THAT is where the money needs to go. Democrats stripped the credit for buying a new car, reduced the credit for buying a house (and restricted it to first time buyers only) and reduced the tax break by $200.00 per person. THOSE were the only REAL stimulus efforts in the bill!

Mzars - thank you for proving my point. Lefties DON'T listen to conservatives, and that's true all the way to the White House. Recall what Obamunist said when questioned about "refundable tax credits" aka welfare for those who pay no taxes. Why should we accept that? His reply: "I won." Libs are supposed to be intellectuals, open-minded, accepting of differing opinions, backgrounds (hence the "diversity" nonsense), but they are open ONLY if you agree with them, as you have proven here. You offer NO FACTS to debate what we've written. NONE. Just name calling (thanks) and general swill.

OINK OINK OINK This PORK bill is going to squander your money on a high-speed train from Disneyland in California to Las Vegas Nv so Sen. Reid's buddies get their political pay-back. Illegal Aliens will continue to take jobs Americans are fired from since the E-Verify provision was eliminated in the conference bill to pay back criminal employers of Illegal Aliens. Your health care now will be dictated by a D.C "Tsar" It appears there is about 2/3rds PORK in the bill, but since NO ONE HAS BEEN ALLOWED TO READ IT let alone understand the major points there is likely to be even more PORK than first detected. It is for sure the only jobs to be created are going to be in an additionally bloated bureaucracy in D.C. The stampede to vote on this PIG IN A POKE bill is so that no one gets a handle on what it really is prior to a vote meaning the fools in D.C. will vote for it 'cause they'll go along to get along. What a bunch of phonies, fools, and anti-Americans they are. Call and or email your Senators right now to express your outrage at this swindle, this theft of the American dream.

It is sad to see so much name calling by the right wingers who would vote for Satan if he ran on the Repubs ticket. It is also handy that they don't have to sign their names to their comments. That is typical of so many in the south. Nice comment about "Yank". At least the "Yanks" are not afraid to speak their mind without being told what to say by either their preacher or Rush Limbaugh. Have a nice day ya'll.

First of all things were great while bush was the president, it was in the last two years of bushs presidency that things started to go bad. This was because the democrates controlled the senate, who do you think wrote the first bill that bush signed, the dems, they also told him it was urgent, that the banking system was going to crash, his doing was to sign it to soon. the dems new what they were doing, just as now, they want to lead us into a one world goverment. A devious world leader will seek world domination ( revelation 6:2 ) This world leader will institute a false religion Revelation 13:11-15 There will be a move toward a global economy, and anyone who refuses allegiance to the world leader cannot participate in commerce (revelation 13:16-18) many will be blind to what is coming. I belive there are good democrates and republicans, this is about good and evil. where do you stand

TO THIS POSTER: "It is sad to see so much name calling by the right wingers who would vote for Satan if he ran on the Repubs ticket." Yet another Dem who offers NO FACTS on this issue. What you ignore is that this state was hugely Dem for decades, so don't assume that all Southerners are Reps.
TO SOUTHERN COMFORT: never mind the legal definitions. If it is not a life at conception, then what is it? From that moment, it metabolizes, grows, and changes on its own. Logically speaking you will never prove that those cells are not a human life from conception. More troubling is your claim that an "unborn child is not...a life yet." Are you arguing that even at 7 or 8 months, when the child could live outside the womb, he is not a life?
